Greetings and salutations fellow petrol heads (as the Brits would call us),
Let me start off by introducing myself. My name is Eric Reynolds, I'm currently 24, and am absolutely OBSESSED with CARS. Now on to what you came here for, lol. My first project/sports car, 1991 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo. These cars have the exact same features as the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 (or GTO as it's known across the pond), minus the active aero features. Anyone who knows these cars knows how big of a pain in the arse it is to find parts and/or work on these cars, as I quickly learned along my journey of resurrecting this beast. They would also know that these cars come stock with a Getrag AWD 5-speed or 6-speed manual transaxle, depending on the year. They also come with the Mitsubishi 6G72T 3.0L V-6, producing 300+/- bhp stock from the factory. This backed by even the 5-Speed Getrag allows these beauties to be capable of 170+ MPH!!! I absolutely love this fact, that and the speedo shows 180! The 6G72T is the twin turbo model of the 6G72 3.0L V-6 that many Mitsu cars use. I have seen and heard told that these "mini-"beasts are capable of handling up to 800+ horsepower on stock crank and rods! Very very tough engines.
Now on to my car. I purchased this baby about a year ago for $2000, with what was supposed to be only an engine knock. Bad news, but oh well, I wanted the challenge of rebuilding this engine. (I love rebuilding motors btw.) Anyways, it turns out that the car had sat for 3+ years in the back lot of the dealership that I purchased it from with NO GAS IN THE TANK!!! Thus began my hell. The entire fuel system was corrupted, minus the lines thank god, but still came out to $1500 in just cost for the parts! Ok, minor set back, no biggy. Once I got that fixed, I was finally able to start the car for the first time and hear the dreaded knock for myself. Turned out to be a spun bearing I found out later after pulling th motor and disassembling it myself. Again, ok, new crank and bearings, as to be expected. Well it turns out that the windshield also has a crack in it, far too large to pass safety inspections (I know this as I am a licensed Inspector Mechanic for the state of Missouri). That's $200 there for safelite to come and replace it for me on site (which I still need to have done), and comes with a LIFETIME warranty. Cool. Dive further into the car and I find out that the clutch needs replaced, no biggie, but another $250+ added to the list. Tires were shot after being flat as a pancake for all those years so I bought a brand new set of Yokohama's for a lil over $500 after shipping. The FRONT CV Axles were found to be shot, that's surprisingly only around $60+/- a pop. Well as I tore the engine down to bare block, BOTH oil galley plugs rounded on me. Stupid aluminum bastards, lol. Which means I had to drill them out. Ok no big deal, right? WRONG! The heli-coil/re-coil kit that I need to re thread the galley plugs ports turned out to be metric pipe threading, meaning O'Reilly's wants $300 for the kit! Luckily I found another kit at Fastenal for $130, but still pricey compared to your standard rethread kits costing only around $25 or so. I'm still trying to come up with the money for this, so that I can finally start reassembling the engine, which is currently just sitting in pieces inside of my garage. Well to make matters worse, the Monday of finals week at Crowder College, somebody decided to to take ONE of my turbos with the exhaust manifold and turbo oil lines still attached. I was SOOOO pissed the next day when I came into to take my finals, and found it missing. Though it still boggles my mind as to why they only took one. I mean both were sitting right there next to each other. Oh well, anyways. So now I had MORE parts that were needed. Unfortunately for me, Mitsubishi does NOT make parts for these cars anymore, meaning that to replace my stolen parts I must go with used or aftermarket. Well to make matters worse, the exhaust manifolds are only found in PAIRS, costing around $160. Not too bad, but I also had a turbo and oil lines to replace. Oil lines are over $100 for a set alone. Luckily I was able to snag up TWO used but still in great condition, turbochargers for $360. Used still usually go for around $250 a pop. So now I'm trying to sell one of my turbos to attain the needed funds to acquire the remaining parts. Which reminds me, if anyone's interested in parts for these cars I've got some spares that I ended up not needing. Such as a used 6G72T crank, the rear turbocharger (stock Mitsu TDO4 9b) w/exhaust manifold and oil lines (seeing as how I'm gonna have to buy both sides new might as well, lol), and a COMPLETE fuel tank with pump AND assembly in EXTREMELY good condition (this part just showed up out of the blue one day, have no idea where it came from, honestly. But I had already purchased and replaced those in mine so it ended up going into storage. These things are practically impossible to find, the only place that sells them brand new is a website called 3sx.com, where they want over $1000 for it.). If you need any parts for a 3000GT VR4, Dodge Stealth R/T TT, or generally any Mitsu 6G72 3.0L powered car, hit me up through email. BE SURE TO PLACE "MITSU PARTS" IN THE SUBJECT, so that I know to make that one a priority to read.
Now that you know the story behind this car, I'll be blogging more about my progress with it as I move along with the process. I have big plans for this car, and have the will to do them. Just lacking the funds to proceed. Wish me luck y'all!
Erk
