An itty bitty Porsche is on the horizon and it may just be affordable, great on MPG and bad to the bone. According to reports from autoweek, Porsche has confirmed that it will begin building a four-cylinder horizontally opposed gasoline engine in the very near future. The new engine will initially be used in an entry level (whoo hoo) mid-engine car "that insiders describe as a spiritual successor to the iconic 550 Spyder". If you are not familiar with the 550 Spyder then you need a solid brushing up on this classic Porsche HERE.
The 550 Spyder was made in the mid 1950's and is credited with giving Porsche its first prestigious racing win in 1956 Targa Florio. Since the time of the 550 many iconic cars have been credited with taking design cues from the 550 including the A/C Cobra! To this day many kit cars have been produced to copy this iconic car. So if you have no desire to build a kit car and want to whoop up some American muscle then start saving up because a new Porsche convertible will be available sometime in the next couple of years. Just don't drive yours like James Dean drove his 550, Rest in Peace Mr. Dean. Be sure to check out the photo of James Dean and his "Little Bastard" below.
What is truly amazing about this new engine is that Porsche engineers have already been able to squeeze over 350 HP out of the test engines and in a very light 2 door coupe/convertible that could mean some serious power to weight ratios. With the expected design to be a mid-engine that could very well mean that this car will handle like a dream too. When all is said and done don't be surprised to see a compact sports car that can tear up the race track and get a very reasonable MPG. We can’t wait!
